Horizon – Vanishing Line

“Know that you sail the seas of life as the master of your own ship”

Jonathan Lockwood Huie

“Time and tide wait for none”

Geoffrey Chaucer ~ 1395 in the Prologue to the Clerk’s Tale

My maritime journey began long before my own birth, woven into the family narrative through tales of seafaring ancestors. These stories, passed down through generations, spoke of sea captains and seafarers, instilling in me a deep respect for the power of the sea.

My earliest personal encounter with the wind’s energy occurred during childhood. A large sheet of black plastic, salvaged from a nearby construction site, became our makeshift sail. Harnessing the wind’s raw power, we were propelled across a field with surprising speed, a thrilling, if somewhat unconventional, introduction to the forces that would later shape my life.

This early fascination with the wind became reality during a school outward bound trip to Loch Torridon. It was there, aboard a Wayfarer dinghy, that I experienced the profound connection between wind, water, and vessel for the first time. The stark beauty of the Scottish Highlands provided a dramatic backdrop to this pivotal moment, sparking a passion for sailing that would ultimately define my path.

I was 16 years old!
