Y23:D17 Paddle boarding

Dawn

05:31 A bright orange shaft of light appeared on the horizon, and civil twilight ended instantly to become a new day. Liquid Asset rocked gently at anchor with only one other boat in the bay. Then slowly, the ‘working’ day unfolded in the usual way. An Algerian Navy warship heads into Plymouth, a diving boat arrives to survey the seabed, and a brand new Princess X90 Cruiser begins sea trials.

There was no time to dawdle as we had an 11:30 appointment with the man at the ice cream van on Cawsand Beach. The pace of life moves slowly here, and after a cuppa and an hour of waiting patiently, the Mini with registration ‘SC13OOP’ arrived.

After many years of sailing, we have observed the growth of paddleboarding everywhere. What makes it so popular? Perhaps today we will discover the reason. Suitably dressed in a wetsuit and fitted with buoyancy aids, ‘Scoop’ gave one-to-one instructions as an apology for being so late.

“This is how you paddle. This is how you turn around. This is how you kneel. This is how you stand up.” So far, so good… Until, of course, Splash! “This is how you get back on board.” After a shaky start, it became easier to stay onboard, although wind, tide, and waves had a habit of reminding you of gravity. Several ‘splashes’ later, it’s time to explore, and Scoop returns to the shore.

After an exhilarating morning, more respect will be afforded to paddle boarders, especially when they are standing up!

Our final evening at anchor and the bay was slowly getting busier. Sailing yachts were arriving from all over and by twilight numbered sixteen. A peaceful setting and gently rocking once more. Zzzzz
