Y24:D4 Mon :: Dolphins

The winds weren’t light, there was no wind. The surface had a glassy sheen. Our ‘quest for the west’ was in serious jeopardy. Undeterred, we motored around Rame Head and set a course for Mevagissey/Fowey. It was smooth and peaceful. The sky was pale blue and a gentle low swell added to the nothingness.

Seagulls and Shearwaters flew off when we disturbed their daytime rest. Divers (seabirds) disappeared under the surface and popped up behind the yacht.

Then in the distance a fin appeared and disappeared. Then again, and again. Eventually a pod of four dolphins arrived and began to play in our bow wave.

Several minutes of magic until one turned on its side, looked up and made a visual connection, before returning to the deep waters.

A gentle wind 3 kts slowly grew into 5 kts. Not a lot, but it was time to raise the sails. Time to raise Code 0, nicknamed the ‘big one’.

We were now sailing at 6 kts in light winds and heading to Mevagissey, arriving early afternoon. Very nice.

Change of plan. We had favourable winds and we had time. Skipper had a ‘thought’ and perhaps a ‘necessity’ as well.

Change of course towards the River Helford missing Dodman Point. Our new course did cross over rocky shallows called the Field and the Bellows but with plenty of water to spare. Popular with fishing boats.

We anchored in 4 metres opposite Trebah Garden beach. A peaceful spot.
