It was Sunday and we were at anchor just outside Brixham on the English Riviera on a warm sunny day. What’s not to like, “pinch me I must be dreaming!”
From the onset there was plenty of movement on the water. A lifeboat sped out to sea and the ferry, full of passengers from Torquay, heading into town. And even the gig boat crew, on a training exercise, stopped for their photo to be taken and a chat. Any excuse to rest up!

And the boys from town had already begun their seaside fun by racing around on their jet skis and fast motor boats.

12:30 Launched the dinghy and motored towards the town, encountering a plethora of characters along the way.

We passed the fish quay with its strong distinct smell of fish and diesel. This quay is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. And it’s definitely a place where fish is made ready for our dinner plates.

Once ashore, we set off around the inner harbour. The place was buzzing with tourists and the eateries were doing a roaring trade. Fish and chips on the quayside were incredibly popular and so we joined the crowd. And there were even more tempting snacks to be had: octopus salad, crayfish tails, dressed crab, or brown shrimp. Delicious!

At 14:00, we experienced what Brixham’s famous fishing fleets must have been like in their early days by jumping aboard a Brixham trawler. We were carrying our lifejackets, and the tour guide thought we were perhaps overly cautious!

Kialou III “long white canoe”
We were anchored near a celebrity yacht, Kialou III. She arrived overnight (02:30) having sailed from Horta, a city in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. She has won races all over the world and held the Sydney to Hobart Race record for 21 years.

17:00. Back on board, the warm sunshine and cool water were an invitation to go for a dip off the aft platform and a swim around the boat. Time to eat, relax and soak up the final rays of the setting sun. The end of another busy day!
