Sailing conditions

Set off in the dinghy for one purpose: to spend the day at the exquisite sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden. Giving up the cooling breeze of the open water, we knew the heat ashore would be tempered by shade. It was getting quite hot (the UK actually recorded its hottest-ever June temperature today).

A stiff breeze brought us onto the sands on a rising tide, with high water at 13:24.

A photo gallery tells the rest of the story as we explored the world-famous gardens. Remarkably, the monumental work of clearing up after Storm Goretti’s 99 mph winds had already been completed, leaving the paths clear for us to enjoy.

Good morning poppets!

Today we had a wonderful adventure ashore to visit a world-famous, magical garden! Oh, it was hot, darlings—ever so hot! But we played hide-and-seek with the sun by following the lovely, cool, shady paths.

Giant, ancient trees towered high above us like friendly green giants, and the exotic bushes and flowers were a total treat, bursting with bright colors and smelling absolutely heavenly.

And guess what we found hidden among the secret paths? A spectacular display of old ships’ figureheads! Those are the giant, beautifully carved wooden statues that used to sit right at the very front of old sailing ships long ago, painted in the brightest, most magnificent colors.

Of course, after all that exploring, we just had to have a traditional Cornish pasty for lunch. Oh, it was absolutely scrumptious!

Oh, this is a terribly exciting knot, darlings, because it absolutely loves to move! Unlike some grumpy old knots that like to sit perfectly still and stay locked in one place, the running hitch is made for action. It creates a clever loop that can slide up and down another rope smoothly, but the moment you pull it hard, it grips tight to haul things along!

Sailors use it when they need to catch another rope and pull it in. It’s like a knot with its very own pair of roller skates!

Lessons learned

A climb to the top of the hill offered a sweeping look back over the past day’s travels.

There lay Liquid Asset, floating gracefully among the other yachts, framed by golden sands, an enormous blue sky, and finally, the horizon stretching out endlessly toward the Americas.

What a wonderful world and time!
