You’ll see our hard-working commercial fishing fleet landing the daily catch, passenger ferries charting their regular routes, and a steady stream of pleasure craft and yachts cutting through the wake. It’s a proud, living port.
A Shifting Ecosystem
But if you look just beyond the harbour wall, you’ll notice things are changing. Lately, we’ve been playing host to a spectacular visitor: Risso’s dolphins. While they are a magnificent sight, their presence tells a deeper story of climate change. Rising water temperatures have brought an influx of octopus to our shores—drawn here by an abundance of local crabs. In turn, the dolphins have followed their favorite prey right to our doorstep.
A Plea to the Public
Yet, while our waters are teeming with life, our local fishermen are facing a bizarre paradox. The British public is routinely buying imported, farmed fish from thousands of miles away, completely bypassing the premium, sustainably caught wild sea bass landed right here on our shores. We have world-class seafood on our doorstep; we just need people to start eating it again.”
